I love podcasts. They are a great way to get useful or entertaining information about a subject I choose & at a time & place I choose. They seem to be coming up more & more in my discussions with other people. I personally listen to them while driving, running, walking over my lunch break, & even sometimes while at work. This post will be dedicated to some of my favorites. I'll try not to overwhelm you with a giant list. Please feel free to share your own recommendations as well!
Technology:
This Week In Tech (TWIT): I find discussions of current technologies fascinating (and occasionally frightening). TWIT is actually a live "netcast" which is also recorded & then can be downloaded as a podcast. Leo Laporte hosts a panel of 3 guests who discuss tech news & what it might mean for our lives. I think the panel is a great format because it allows for a wide variety of viewpoints & backgrounds on the show & occasionally leads to lively debate.
I also dig This Week In Google & Mac Break Weekly which follow a similar format but are obviously more specialized. There are also probably 15 or so additional tech-related shows that are part of the TWIT network depending on your specific area of interest.
Running:
Marathon Training Academy: Angie & Trevor Spencer host a show dedicated to... you guessed it, marathons. I'm relatively new to this podcast but it seems to be pretty popular among the running community. There's not much else to say here- unless you are training for a marathon, or hope to, this probably won't interest you.
Marathon Talk: Similar in concept to above except this is hosted by two blokes across the pond in England. They have some great guests on the show but the episodes tend to run (get it?) a little long in my humble opinion as they are bogged down by a lot of different "segments".
Running + Nutrition:
Paleo Runner: I may be a little biased b/c the host of this show went to my high school but this is a really solid podcast. Aaron Olson has had a great lineup of guests, many of them highly regarded in the paleo & endurance sport communities. You can tell Aaron knows his stuff when it comes to nutrition & fitness. He's read (or at least can speak intelligently about) his guest's books & he asks some really great questions during the interviews. He also has brought in a fair amount of guests who have differing or even opposing viewpoints (vegans for instance) but respectfully allows them to share their own experience. The podcast has been on hiatus for the past few month's as Aaron's been working on his book but I definitely recommend going back through the archives & hopefully he'll be producing new episodes again soon!
Fantasy Football:
The Audible (FootballGuys.com): These guys get pretty in-depth. They've been around a long time & are pretty well-respected in the industry. They really study the game of football & include significant film study in order to better inform their fantasy football advice. I especially like analyst Sigmund Bloom's weekly On the Couch episodes. He's got a very thoughtful approach to the hobby & much like a couch it becomes comforting to tune in & listen each week.
Living the Stream: Awesome theme-music & plenty of hi-jinks. JJ Zachariason & Denny Carter take a look at possible one-week plugins at quarterback, tight-end, & defense for your lineup.
Fantasy Focus: ESPN's original fantasy football podcast and of this list, the podcast I've been listening to the longest. I don't necessarily go here for much of my fantasy football advice but it's definitely entertaining. One of the co-hosts, Nate Ravitz, just left the show after what I believe was 8 seasons but it should be starting back up this week with Matthew Berry (basically the face of fantasy football & someone who has been a big part of it's recent mainstream success) & a new co-host. I'm skeptical it'll have the same draw for me going forward, as the Nate-Matthew combo worked really nicely.
This is by no means a comprehensive list as there are other shows I will dabble in but these are the ones I listen to most regularly. Please let me know if you are a regular listener to any of these as well & add your own favorites in the comments section!
