It's a great day to start a blog

I've decided to jump back into blogging. I've had a number of short lived blogs in the past but they've all been abandoned due to a lack of commitment. I think the problem with my last couple efforts was that I just wasn't having fun with them. I had chosen a narrow focus after reading several recommendations about how important focus is in making a blog successful. In fact, one writer even calls a blog without a specific topic a waste of time. While these authors make great points, their definition of what makes a blog successful seems to be how popular it is or how much money it makes. If that's what makes a successful blog, then in most cases I agree that specific focus is very important. But I can think of many other definitions of success when it comes to blogging: If it helps hone your writing or HTML skills, if it helps you connect with even a few people, or if it simply brings you joy.

With this blog I am aiming for those latter definitions of success. I am going to talk about the things that interest me and see where it goes from there. If people end up stumbling upon the blog and I make connections with people who have similar interests, all the better. If I do end up narrowing my focus, so be it.  But as of this initial post the main goal is pretty simple: write. This blog is somewhat inspired by Matt Cutts' blog. Matt is a Google employee (currently on leave). I appreciate the simplicity of his blog and as far as I can tell it's really just a hobby for him: a place to share his thoughts, engage in discussions, and hopefully help a few people.

So for those who have made it this far, what are some of the topics most likely to be found on these pages? Current candidates for me are running, technology, & fantasy football. But it's also hard to say what I'll be obsessing over 3-6 months from now. I also really like the idea of recapping 30 day challenges (I also owe this idea to Matt Cutts- he does the same on his blog & you can check out his TED talk here).

Thanks for joining me for post #1. I'm loving the freedom that this niche-less format provides and I'm sure I'll be back often!

More Thoughts on Financial Independence

In my last post , I gave some introductory thoughts on the concept of financial independence. I touched on what I would consider to be traditional thinking about when someone should retire. To close out the post, I asked why more people aren't retiring early. I claimed the short answer is that it's not easy. Other short answers that come to mind are that we can't afford it or that it's not the way we do things- we should remain a "productive member of society". Before I go any further, I want to give credit to the places that have been helpful as I've been learning about personal finance & financial independence. They've been instrumental & inspirational as I've developed some new ways of looking at the world: The Root of Good blog. I'm not sure how I stumbled upon this one but his post $150,000 Income, $150 Income Tax  was especially eye-opening to me. His monthly financial updates have also given insight into how a family with ki...

List of Side Income Sources

In my last post at the beginning of April, I mentioned a few of the ways I’ve been making extra cash online. Since then, I’ve had more time to research, explore, and test out different options. I also understand that different people are looking for different things, so what I find to be the most beneficial may not apply to you. It really does seem that the options are limitless, and in this post I hope to provide a more varied and comprehensive list. Because these types of things are frequently changing and new opportunities popping up, I plan to use this post as sort of a “home base” for everything I’m utilizing.  I will also try and categorize the methods as best I can. Leave a comment below, fill out the contact form in the upper right, or drop me a line on twitter if you have questions, comments, or would like an invite to one of the apps/programs that require a unique code. This list was list updated on June 25, 2016. Like Venmo, But Better Circle App – S...

Side Income & Sign Up Bonuses - Bitcoin & Crypto Edition

By far my most popular post was one I did in 2016 on Side Income Sources . I listed out several ways I had made some beermoney/extra cash online. In the couple years that followed my focus for generating side income shifted to credit card & bank account bonus churning. I highly recommend Doctor of Credit  and the r/churning subreddit if you're looking to get into that hobby. These days I have young kids and also generate side income mowing lawns so I don't spend nearly as much time in any of the endeavors listed above. That said, I'm not likely to pass up a deal if it's not too time consuming or if it involves a financial product I'm hoping to try anyway. I thought it'd be fun to do an updated version of my side income post 5 years later in a space that has become a prominent interest/hobby for me. Suffice to say that 2021 has been "The Year of Crypto" for me. The staying power of blockchain technology & decentralized monetary networks has bec...
